Treating the cause of chloramines not the symptom

Pool Photo

Chlorine byproducts (chloramines and trihalomethanes) are formed when Chlorine combines with nitrogen and organics (human skin cells, sweat and urine). The majority of organics in swimming pool water is human skin cells in the 10-30 micron size range. HPT employs Hydrotech Drum Filters which are NSF approved. Hydrotech Drum Filters backwash every 15 – 30 minutes, depending upon swimmer load, however each backwash cycle only lasts a few seconds. Thus, skin cells are removed quickly and efficiently from pool water, and free chlorine has very little time to oxidize and transform the skin cells into byproducts. Trihalomethanes and combined chlorine levels are 50-70% lower in HPT pools than in traditional pool systems and byproduct formation is drastically diminished.

HPT employs a small side loop of sand filtration to capture the small amount of particles that pass through the drum filter’s special filter element. HPT’s sand filter is backwashed often. In addition to particle control, HPT employs proper pool hydraulics to ensure the particles are effectively transported back to HPT’s water treatment system and we make sure there are no dead spots in the pool itself to form byproducts. Most or all of the main flow goes through UV that addresses the soluble nutrients like sweat, urine and saliva in the pool water. A side loop passes through HPT’s THM stripper that removes 50-90% of chloramines each pass.

HPT also addresses the air ventilation system in indoor pools. Traditional HVAC systems are designed to keep windows condensate free and limit the amount of air to pool water interface because of heat transfer and loss. HPT encourages air movement at the air to water interface as this is where the swimmers nose is and where byproducts are most readily released from the water by swimmers movement. ^Back to top

Airflow in your facility

diagram illustrating airflow optimized for chloramine removal

How the air circulates in your facility can impact the levels of chloramines present, particularily at the surface of your pool where it is the worst for swimmers. Hydraulic CFX 3D ventilation models focused on THM and chloramine ventilation, combined with thermic comfort and condensation considerations, has led to new ventilation principles.

Hydraulic Pool Design

3-D pool modeling eliminates dead zones and lowers headloss to move particles to the outlets. Uniform chlorine distribution is optimized

Hydrotech Drum Filters

Hydrotech HDF802-1G drum filter

Our NSF certified drum filters remove and discharge in a concentrated stream more than 90% of particles in just a few hours. Backwash is reduced by 90% compared to full flow sand filters.

UV Sterilization

barrel-style CL-series Ultraviolet Sterilization unit

UV sterilization is a proven solution to harmful waterborne pathogens commonly associated with aquatic recirculating systems. UV treatment takes place only inside the UV exposure chamber and unlike ozone, leaves no residue downstream, and is therefore harmless to humans or animals in the pool.

NSF Certified Sand Filter

backwashed sand filtration

A 10% side-loop sand filter downstream of the drum filter is backwashed daily, minimizing particle degredation (i.e. DBP formation).

THM Stripper

Strippers for THM removal

THM is formed when chlorine reacts with dissolved organics. HPT's THM Strippers remove THM before they enter the pool.

PLC Controls

PLC Controls

HPT's proprietary PLC Controls provide precisely integrated control and monitoring of our systems.
